Another Incident of Suicide at Foxconn

The Taiwanese company Chimei Innolux Corp, associated with Foxconn Technology, a manufacturer of popular mobile phone iPhone of Apple confirmed the death of a worker in a factory in China early on Tuesday morning, which adds to a number of suicides raised questions internationally about working conditions in the country. A total of 11 Chinese officials Taiwanese Foxkon have committed suicide this year in Chinese factories, often jumping off buildings.
It is unclear whether the new suicide death is also another incident of suicide as according to official Chinese news agency Xinhua, the 18 year old from the Hebei province, who worked “for a half day ” last month as a trainee at the plant under an agreement with the school when studying – fell from the sixth floor of a building where Inoloux dorms were workers. The incident is investigated by police.
Foxconn, which produces computer components for companies of the global IT market , like Dell, Nokia, Hewlett-Packard and others, has been accused of imposing extremely harsh conditions of work in factories. The founder Terry Goose claimed in a statement that none of the suicides is related to working conditions in factories of the company.
Foxconn employs about 400,000 workers in Shenzhen alone. The company responded by announcing that it will increase salaries by 67% which means that employees will receive 2000 Yuan ($ 290 U.S/224 Euros) per month from October 1. The company also announced that it will proceed with improvements in the dormitories for workers in its factories in Shenzhen in order to prevent the possibility of extending similar suicides.
