The popularity of the ruling coalition of Chancellor Angela Merkel has fallen to record lows, according to a new poll released yesterday. It appears from the poll, that if elections were held today, the coalition of Merkel ( Christian Democrats, Christian Social Union of Bavaria and Free Democrats) would receive 34% of the vote – the lowest rate recorded for the three parties since Polls opened in 1986. Merkel is expected to defend the achievements of the coalition at a press conference later today, before the summer holidays.
The opposition Social Democrats and Greens gather together 47% of the preferences of voter, a figure which would give the majority to govern, according to the same poll, and especially the percentage of Greens (19% ) is accepted for the record party. The smallest coalition partner, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), the survey provides only 4 % rate so low that puts them below the threshold of 5 %, which would allow them to enter parliament. The poll was conducted on a sample of 2500 people from the company Forsa for Stern magazine and private network RTL.
