The Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica will invest $1.5 billion in Peru during the period 2010-2013 to install new fiber optics networks in order to enlarge the number of citizens of the South American country which have Internet access, as it has been announced by Cesar Alierta, Chairman of the company, after a meeting with the country’s president Alan Garcia. “It’s the most important decision of Telefonica in Peru in the last 10 years,” he stated to reporters during his departure from the meeting. It was noted that the new network will have a length of 1200 km and is expected to be installed within the next two to three years. It will allow more than 5 million people in Peru to gain access to the Internet for the first time, said Alierta. Peru has about 28 million inhabitants. The project will increase the size of the network of fiber optic by 5000 km.
